How-To Geek

Work with us

Think you have the perfect combination of geek knowledge and writing skills? We’re always looking for a few experienced writers to join our team.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for experienced freelance writers to cover how-to guides, product roundups and comparisons, and explainers across a myriad of topics, including, but not limited to, things like Windows, Microsoft Office, macOS, iPhone, Android, Google, Smart Home, Cloud Services, Small Business / IT, Gadgets, and many other topics.

Note: We are not looking for freelance tech news writers.

All of our writers should have the following qualities:

You must be a geek at heart, always looking to learn more about technology and make your gadgets work better.

You must be able to write tips, how-to articles, and explainers about complex topics that are clear and easy to understand, even to non-experts. Again, we are not looking for tech news writers.

You must be creative, and have the ability to generate article ideas, take suggestions, and make topics interesting and exciting.

You must be at least 18 years old and have your own computer.

You must have solid English writing skills.

You should have some basic screenshot and image editing chops. HTML skills are a plus.

Here’s a couple of our previous articles so you can get an idea of what we’re looking for in terms of quality and content. Please make sure to look through these before you decide to apply:

How-To Article: How to Use Siri to Control the Lights in Your House

Explainer: Do LED Light Bulbs Really Last 10 Years?

Explainer: Do I Need a Graphics Card in My PC?

How-To Article: How to Hide NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience In-Game Overlay Icons

How-To Article: How to Get Better Performance from Steam In-Home Streaming

These are just a few recent smart home and gaming examples, but they are all solid articles that we’re proud of.

Careers at How-To Geek

  • Features Writer & Technology Enthusiast

    United States or Canada Flexible

This position will operate on a remote, freelance basis.

Are you a technology enthusiast with a background in writing?

Valnet Inc. is looking for feature writers for the website HowToGeek.com.

How-To Geek is an online technology publication with tens of millions of readers each month. Our readers love How-To Geek because of its unique voice. We’re not a website for geeks—we are the geeks.

We’re the people you turn to when your computer isn’t working right, you need to do something technical, or you want to understand the latest gadgets—and which are the best ones to buy. We explain it all in simple, approachable terms. How-To Geek is for everyone.

Our target audience are everyday consumers who are interested in tech; we write for the lay-people, not industry insiders. For example, our readers are the "Should You Upgrade to a Wi-Fi 7 Router?" crowd. Not the "Wi-Fi 7 Routers Will Usher In the IoT Market Penetration Shift" crowd.

Candidates must have strong knowledge of at least one of our verticals: Android, iPhone, Carriers, Video Games, Streaming, Hobbies (Hobbies, Photography, DIY), Social Media, Smart Home, Windows, Mac, Microsoft, Web, Cutting Edge (Electric Vehicles, AI & Machine Learning, Space, Cryptocurrency, Virtual Reality), Hardware (TV, Audio, Wifi & Routers, eReaders, Chromebook), Linux, and Programming.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Write a minimum of 12 feature articles per month, with no upper limit
    • Generate and pitch new ideas/topics for articles
    • Stay up to date on the latest tech news, products and updates
    • Input work into our in-house system and format images according to our guidelines

    Application Requirements

    • CV
    • Cover Letter (tell us why you want to write for us)
    • 2-3 articles you've written that demonstrate your writing abilities; tech articles a plus
    • Specify the vertical(s) you are most interested in being considered for

Applicants must be highly motivated and possess the following requirements

    • Relevant experience in writing and editing in the English language
    • Ability to break down complex topics
    • Expert knowledge of one or more technology platforms, products or apps
    • If you choose iOS, or Windows as your primary vertical, you must have iOS/iPadOS 16 or Windows 10/11 (with the expectation of updating to the latest version ASAP after it's made available)

We will get back to you as soon as possible if we think you'd make a solid addition to the team.

We look forward to collaborating with positive and inspired candidates.
